John Fisher a contemporary of Thomas More. Like Thomas, he could not support Henry VIII’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon, his subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn and his acceptance of the title ‘Head of the Church in England.’ He was the only bishop to oppose Henry’s actions on the grounds that they repudiated papal authority.
He avoided direct confrontation with the other bishops. He stated that, ‘ I condemn no other man’s conscience: their conscience may save them, and mine must save me.’
He wrote against the errors and corruption into which the Church had fallen. He shares his feast day with Thomas More.
