St. Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orléans, was a peasant girl living in medieval France, who came to believe that God had chosen her to lead her country to victory during what’s now known as the Hundred Years War. She was not taught to read or write, but she was deeply religious. Though remembered as a fearless warrior and considered a heroine of the war between France and England, Joan never actually fought in battle or killed an opponent.
