Gregory the Great – First Pope from an Monastic Background

Published: September 3, 2021

Gregory the Great was a talented administrator who used his skills to benefit the poor and to benefit the church.   He lived a simple life, always mindful of those who had nothing.  He was a reluctant Pope, missing as he did the quiet solitude of the monastery.  However, he put aside his desire for a quiet life and answered God’s call to preach the Gospel.  He was responsible for sending missionaries such as Augustine to England.
