The Little Way to The Almighty

Each morning the crowds flocked in their hundreds to the 6.30am Novena Mass; each evening they came back again for Evening Prayer and to listen to that day's Guest Speaker. The air inside and around St. Eugene's Cathedral was charged with expectancy. The eager hope of the people was palpable as they drew nearer to the Cathedral. And inside, a spirit of generosity flourished as those who had come early in order to ensure themselves a seat, willingly sacrificed their comfort to welcome in beside them those who hadn't been quite so providential.

And then it began. Music poured; voices soared; prayer ascended; hearts lifted and spirits transcended the familiar to strain towards the Divine. Night after night, speakers of inordinate courage and truth bore testimony to their journey from darkness to light, from grief and suffering to peace and joy, from murderous rage to compassion and forgiveness. Real people. People who had refused to become less than they were before they'd been assaulted by unimaginable tragedy and grief. People who had fought their way out of the Stygian darkness of despair into the light of forgiveness, and into a compassion for broken humanity hitherto unknown.

The congregation seemed to breathe as one; pray as one; weep as one. Dear Jesus, what comfort and consolation we offer each other when we are open to the presence of God in our midst: when we feel His powerful love operating in our world; when we sense the brush of the bright wings of the Holy Spirit as He broods lovingly over people gathered together in God's name.

The people were hungry and they were fed. Each evening as the Monstrance was raised in blessing above our heads, we felt a surge of renewed love for our faith, a gloriously resurrected love for our Church which, though it may appear bruised and battered at times, is in a constant state of renewal, constantly striving to answer the needs of those in its care. We live in a world terrifying in its complexity, but glorious in its miracles.

Thanks be to God.
