Gaps, spaces, are interesting, even enlightening. Once I witnessed the sun setting in the space between two hills, its crimson light giving them a new, beautiful form.
Does truth lie in the empty spaces between things? Things we can see or touch can enlighten us. Can we learn from empty spaces, gaps? Can they cast a revelatory light on the objects around them?
If we feel another's brokenness, are we prompted to reach out in solicitude to fill the empty gaps?
Some gaps, if we reflect on them, can move us disconcertingly out of our comfort zones.
Gaps in conversations can be embarrassing.
Gaps in conversations are most uncomfortable when the silence painfully throbs with truths left unsaid.
And the gaps, the discrepancies, between the faith we profess, and how we act, either overtly or in our hearts! What about those gaps? If I profess to love all mankind as Jesus directs me to, but harbour bitterness and hatred in my heart for individuals or groups, then I'm in serious trouble. Remember what Jesus said about hypocrisy!
Gaps between the prayers we utter and our thoughts, our feelings, or our lack of feeling! What about those gaps?
According to Mahatma Ghandi, forgiveness is the attribute of the strong while the inability to forgive is a sign of weakness. Is there a gap between the show of strength we parade with the words of forgiveness and the reality of our obdurate refusal to forgive?
Mahatma Ghandi also claims that happiness is when "what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony."
Gaps are worth reflecting on. Gaps can be enlightening.
